The luteal phase, explained for the guy dating her

Updated August 2026

Roughly half the month sits between ovulation and her next period. Most of what men label as "she's being weird" happens in the back end of it, and it's the easiest stretch of the cycle to predict.

Where it sits in the month

Day one is the first day of real bleeding. The period runs three to seven days, the follicular stretch carries her up to ovulation somewhere around day 14, and the luteal phase covers everything after that until the next period starts.

It's the reliable half. Twelve to fourteen days, most of the time. If her cycles swing between 26 and 33 days, the swing is almost always in the first half — the luteal stretch holds its length. That's what makes the countdown work: once you know she ovulated, her period is about two weeks out whether her cycle runs short or long.

Week one after ovulation

Progesterone climbs. Body temperature sits a few tenths of a degree higher, so she may run warm at night and kick the duvet off. Appetite picks up. Sleep can get heavier or patchier depending on the woman.

Mood-wise this week is usually fine. Calmer than ovulation week, less social, more inclined to stay in. If she cancels plans in this stretch it's rarely about you.

The last five or six days

This is the part people mean when they say PMS. Progesterone falls off a cliff before the bleed starts, and that drop is what produces the classic list: sore breasts, bloating, headaches, a shorter fuse, cravings, tears at things that wouldn't normally land.

Not every woman gets all of it, and some barely notice. But the timing is consistent for the ones who do. Same window, same symptoms, month after month. Once you've tracked a couple of cycles you'll know her particular version of it before she mentions it.

Worth saying plainly: this isn't a licence to explain her feelings away. If she's annoyed with you in week four, there's a decent chance she's also annoyed with you. Telling a woman she's only upset because of her hormones is the fastest way to prove you learned nothing.

What to do with the window

  • Move the demanding stuff earlier. Meeting your friends, the long drive, the conversation about where this is going — none of it improves in day 26.
  • Keep the plans low-effort. Food at hers beats a table you booked at nine.
  • Stock the flat before she asks. Painkillers, chocolate, a hot water bottle, whatever she reached for last month.
  • Text first. In this stretch the effort registers more than usual, and skipping it registers too.

If you're seeing more than one

Four women, four different day counts, and no chance of holding them in your head. One is on day 3 and wants to be left alone. Another is on day 22 and about to hit the rough end of her luteal phase. Guessing gets you the wrong tone with the wrong person.

A tracker handles the arithmetic. You store one date per woman and the app tells you where each of them is when you open it. The maths behind it takes about a minute to understand if you'd rather do it yourself.

Common questions

How long does the luteal phase last?

Twelve to fourteen days for most women. It's the steady half of the cycle, which is why counting backwards from the next period works better than counting forwards from the last one.

When does PMS actually start?

Usually the last five or six days, once progesterone starts dropping. The first week after ovulation is generally uneventful.

Can I tell without asking her?

You can guess from behaviour and be wrong a lot. Or you can get one date and count. Asking is easier than you think.
